Diesel Fuel Filter / Water separator:

On diesel powered vehicles the purpose of a Fuel filter / Water separator is mainly to remove foreign particles as well as water. However, to much water in a fuel filter will render it incapable of protecting the system. So to ensure this does not happen, most diesel engine fuel systems are now equipped with fuel filter / water separator's for the main purpose of trapping and holding water that may be mixed in with the fuel. Some diesel powered vehicles have a primary and secondary filter. The primary filter is usually located between the fuel tank and the supply pump, the secondary filter is located between the supply pump and the injector pump.

Some filters use an internal replaceable element inside a clear plastic or glass bowl or also inside a black plastic or steel shell; these are commonly referred to as a shell and element design. However, some vehicles may also have a screw- on type fuel filter / water separator which allows for faster change out since the complete filter is a throwaway.

Explanation:

The vehicles fuel filter removes dirt, rust, and other particles from the fuel flow before it reaches the carburetor or fuel injection system. Fuel filters become dirty and worn-out over time. If your vehicle has a loss of power, hesitation and hard starting, It may be traced to a clogged fuel filter. As the fuel filter gets older, more and more dirt and rust collect inside it, gradually restricting the flow of fuel to the engine.                            A partially restricted filter will usually pass enough fuel to keep the engine running at idle or low speed, but may starve the engine for fuel at higher speeds or loads. So your engine may run fine putting around town, but sputter and lack power when you try to drive at highway speeds or pass someone.
